A five-minute walk from Ayr’s beachfront lies Chestnuts Hotel, a charming retreat that combines traditional decor with contemporary chic. Never is this more evident than in the hotel’s exquisite restaurant, the beating heart located at the centre of the boutique hotel. Open to guests and residents, the sleek dining room can accommodate up to 60 in style and comfort. Dark wood, rich upholstery, cream fireplaces and thick carpets impart an air of grandeur. Despite the distinct air of sophistication, however, the vibe is more laidback than rigidly formal; dressing up for dinner is optional, not mandatory. As for the food itself, it’s beautifully plated and cooked to perfection to preserve the bold flavours that Scotland’s natural larder supplies in droves. From the seafood to the produce, many of the ingredients are sourced locally before being infused with a little internationally-inspired nous. Homemade Thai fishcakes are a highlight, but in truth there’s a lot to love here, from haggis pie to tiger prawn fajitas and a salad of roasted goats’ cheese with beef tomato and balsamic vinegar. Open for lunch and dinner seven days a week, Chestnuts Hotel Restaurant does the little things well and the big things – namely the food and the decor – with aplomb.

The food here is amazing and I was pleasantly surprised to find that they offer a vegan menu as an alternative to their usual menu. For me, this made the whole experience even better. Lovely relaxed atmosphere and we'll definitely be returning.
